FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FUTURIST EDITOR INTRODUCES NEW BOOK AT CONFERENCE

BETHESDA, MD — A new comprehensive guide to the study of the future will be introduced July 31, 2004, at the World Future Society conference in Washington, D.C.

Futuring: The Exploration of the Future by Edward Cornish, editor of the FUTURIST magazine, is an authoritative introduction to scientific thinking about the future. Futuring explains futurist techniques and the role that forward-looking people can play in creating a better tomorrow. The book describes specific methods to help readers understand trends, identify opportunities, and avoid dangers.

Highly anticipated by experts in the field, Futuring has attracted a lot of attention and garnered praise from professional futurists. "For anyone who wants to know what futures studies are all about in their larger context, here is a practical guide, free of hype and jargon, that tells the whole story," says W. Warren Wagar, emeritus professor of history, State University of New York at Binghamton

The World Future Society’s annual conference attracts 1,000 forward-thinkers each year to discuss developments in technology, business, economics, health, and a host of other topics concerning the future. More than 190 expert speakers are scheduled to address the gathering at the Grand Hyatt Washington.

The 2004 conference will feature noted futurist speakers such as artificial-intelligence expert Ray Kurzweil and Foundation on Economic Trends founder and president Jeremy Rifkin, who lead the opening plenary session Sunday, July 31.

Former Colorado governor Richard D. Lamm is scheduled to talk about twenty-first-century health care, and Intel Corporation vice president David L. Tennenhouse is scheduled to address innovations in computing. Tim Mack, the Society’s new president, will chair the 2004 conference.

Also bringing their insights to the conference will be former UN ambassador John W. McDonald; White House Director for Asian Affairs Karen Brooks; Arlington Institute president John L. Peterson; and T. Irene Sanders, executive director of the Washington Center for Complexity and Public Policy.

The World Future Society is a nonprofit educational and scientific organization serving as a clearinghouse for future trends, issues, and information. Founded in 1966, the Society publishes the bimonthly FUTURIST magazine and remains the world’s oldest and largest association devoted to futures studies.
