Director of Development

Position Summary:
This Chicago-based position presents an exciting opportunity to play a central role in driving progress towards our mission. The Director of Development is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating the strategy and activities to drive growth across all fundraising programs while diversifying revenue streams and expanding the opportunity for major giving. This includes GRANTS, DONOR MANAGEMENT, CORPORATE GIVING, PLANNED GIVING, SPONSORSHIPS, MEMBERSHIP, STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, and RECRUITMENT of HIGH NET-WORTH INDIVIDUALS. While our headquarters are in Chicago, our network, organizations and supporters reaches across the globe.  The Director of Development reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

While the organization is 50 years old, we function very much like a start-up and have a start-up mentality and culture. We are very fast paced and agile. Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain positive and constructive relationships with board members and constituents conveying the organization’s mission and values while facilitating revenue generation.
  • Be a strong staff partner to the Board Chair and Board of Directors in support of fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Create a growth plan for development that aligns with World Future Society’s fundraising goals and business plan.
  • Build on the successful WorldFuture 2016 Summit, develop opportunities and relationships to maximize this effort while leveraging the event to diversify revenue streams through corporate and individual giving.
  • Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with the mission of World Future Society; coordinate timely and comprehensive applications to target grant programs; execute awarded grants in conjunction with the granting organization’s terms and conditions.
  • Create an ongoing stewardship program that proactively identifies and cultivates board members, prospects, strengthens donor relationships and increases donor loyalty through renewed and/or increased giving.
  • Partner with the Board, COO, Community Strategist and Communications in development of messages and content for development program initiatives, fundraising appeals and communications.
  • Ensure all sponsor and donor benefits are executed consistent with the terms and conditions negotiated in their agreement.
  • Establish and document standard operating procedures for Development programs, processes and systems updating as needed.
  • Develop annual work plan and income/expense budget(s), review, authorize and document all expenditures within approved budget limits.  Secure vendor partners and negotiate contract terms in conjunction with the COO for approved expenditures.
  • Develop, implement, and manage a robust fundraising platform such as Salesforce on par with other top non-profit organizations. Includes records management for all prospects and donors, coordinating activities of all staff engaged in maintaining our electronic and paper records of contributions and corresponding acknowledgment letters and pledge commitments.
  • Ensure accuracy of donation gift recording and financial accounting of all income and sources working closely with the COO and Accounting. Provide management with concise, meaningful, and up-to-date activity reports.

The Director of Development will be a team player and will participate in and support other functions and efforts of the World Future Society as an expectation of their role.

Ideal Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3 – 7 years of progressive non-profit fundraising/development experience
  • Familiarity with Salesforce for Non Profits or similar
  • Proven track record in setting and achieving revenue targets, managing budgets and preparing financial reports
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate and manage portfolio of accounts
  • Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base
  • Strong evaluation, planning, coordination, organization, and problem-solving skills, with ability to think both strategically and tactically
  • Effective communicator, comfortable in public speaking and straightforward individual conversations; at ease addressing complaints, resolving problems and issues
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively
  • Strong volunteer/staff partnership building skills and understanding of membership services environment
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of donor data base programs and software
  • Able and willing to travel as needed
