Personal Futuring

Personal futuring can change your life, because it’s about you, your family, and YOUR future. When you understand futures methods and tools, you can apply these to your business and career in a way that increases your chances of long-range success. But, perhaps most important, personal futuring will help you acquire a key element of leadership -- long-term perspective. This is a way of viewing life, business, and the world around you that keeps your long-term goals and vision in mind, weighing the benefits and consequences of every day actions on your future.

Question/Statement: What is the most challenging aspect of applying futuring techniques to your own life goals?

Personal Futuring

Some of my friends still have the attitude that the future just sort of happens ("que sera, sera"). Either that, or they jump on trends (such as stock market shifts) with the rest of the herd.

Futurists' tools like "scenario planning" seem too intimidating to a lot of people. What is one tip you can give to help people start thinking seriously about their futures?

Personal Futures--the Que sera attitude.

In truth, ignoring the future and the available futures tools is a litle like starting out on a long river trip with no rudder or paddle. You can go wherever the river takes you,but it's a better trip if you can make choices (and avoid the big rocks!).
I think the key is understanding (accepting) that we CAN make choices about the long term future, just as we do in the short term. Long term thinking takes more time, but is not difficult.
But, like your friends in the stock market, it's EASY to buy popular stocks, and research takes time. But the people who take the time do the research, whether in stocks or personal futures, will probably have better results.

What is the most challenging ..

Pardon me a moment while I comment on my own question. My observations suggest that people find it diffcult to make the time to take on a project like thinking about their own future. There are too many demands for their immediate attenion.

One answer is a workshop. The workshop takes you away from the family, the office, emails, etc. People who spend a day in a personal futuring workshop come out with a new perspective on their lives, and a good start on a plan for the next ten years. Futuring is not diffcult, it just takes a little time and thought.
