Multicultural Society Intercultural Transcultural
I have worked for sometime on multicultural , intercultural and transcultural societies
The differences I find are due to the continuous increase in the meeting of cultures is due also to intensive migrations,
Multicultural is what we have lived in for centuries as people move and people of different cultures meaning different values, priorities and choices have to live together.
Our societies are all multicultural but, as time goes by, the need for intercultural relations grows as exchange of values, behaviours and choices increases. Intercultural is based on exchanges of values etc. and mutual respect.
It a is great step that can and has happened in a peaceful process as it has in some European countries and in some way in US.
Transcultural is much more, as it requires a strong acceptance by different cultures of living together and exchange of different values with no prevalence of one over the other. One example existing are the " "mestizos" in Latin America where the different cultures are melted: the natives as well as Africans, imported thorough the centuries , or Spanish invaders, all with originally different values and hence choices. In my view this process takes centuries hence, in looking at the future, this means, long term developments. Of course we have to take into account the increase rapidity of moving and hence many cultures living together in a transcultural manner, will take less time than in the past. It is deep process as it impinges on values which are at the basis of each and all cultures. Maybe a process of "mestizations" as what has happened in Latin America, can be found in many other countries or regions
These are just some thoughts that I hope they may be useful to the debate.
