Current Forecasts
Special to Web visitors, here are a few of the
editors' favorite forecasts from this issue of The Futurist:
There will be a dramatic rise in the number of computers
that help doctors over the next few years, whether it be to aid with difficult surgeries,
provide a quick diagnoses, or to assist with physical therapy. -- Adi Armoni,
page 13.
The Internet's impact will soon be felt more strongly in
rural areas, particularly in the farming industry. Farm sales over the Internet will rise
from $35 billion this year to $124 billion by 2004. -- Paul Rux, page 14.
Real-time traffic information, computerized navigation,
and even automated cars will make driving easier. -- PIARC Committee On Intelligent
transport, page 26.
By 2020, automated cars will be smart and environmentally
friendly. They will be part chauffer, part personal assistant, and part Web browser. -- Glen
Hiemstra, page 31.
Resumes on microchips will one day be implanted in
workers' bodies. Screening job candidates could be as simple as walking candidates through
a device similar to a metal detector. -- John A. Challenger, page 35.
Echo Boomers, the generation of 80 million people born
between 1977 and 1997, are just entering the workforce and will have a big effect on real
estate over the next 40 to 50 years. Echo Boomers will be buying starter homes, which will
allow others to sell their homes and move to bigger ones. -- Mark L. Alch,
page 43.
