Current Forecasts
Special to Web visitors, here are a few of the
editors' favorite forecasts from this issue of The Futurist:
High-tech career centers, featuring
virtual-reality conference rooms and holographic guides, will one day help match the right
individual with the right company. -- David C. Borchard, counselor and consultant, page
22.
Public education in the United States will undergo
a radical transformation by 2020. This revolution, spurred by economic and social forces,
will do away with administrators and give more power to students and teachers. --
Management professor Irving H. Buchen, page 30.
- Threats to children's health will increasingly be behavioral rather than
medical. As the twentieth century brought polio, influenza, and other diseases under
control, the twenty-first century will see more health threats from obesity, early sexual
activity, drug use, gun violence, traffic accidents, and other risky behaviors among
youth. --Child Trends; American Academy of Pediatrics, page 6.
- Loyalty will make a comeback in many organizations. Companies that nurture loyal
employees are increasingly finding that they improve productivity. With less-frequent
turnover of staff, these companies will also increase the loyalty of their customers.
--John Challenger, page 15
- Future world governance will be "multicentered," rather than controlled by a
single entity, as nation-states in perpetual conflict wither away. Having several
different "regimes" to handle the myriad of world problems, such as the
environment, trade, and human rights, will help create a truly global society, according
to political scientist Walter Truett Anderson. --page 67.
