Submission Guidelines for the WorldFuture 2012 Essay Collection

The World Future Society is planning to publish a collection of essays in conjunction with WorldFuture 2012: Dream. Design. Develop. Deliver, to be held July 27-29, 2012, in Toronto, Canada.

This collection will be published in a special edition of World Future Review, the journal of the Society's Professional Membership program, and will be made available to all conference registrants.

Deadline for completed papers is February 20, 2012. Extended to February 29!

Manuscript Submission

  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced, with references (if used) placed at the end of the paper.
  • Manuscript length should not exceed approximately 7,000 words (30 pages double-spaced).
  • Electronic text should be submitted as a Word document or other PC compatible word-processing format. PDF files are strongly discouraged.
  • Photographs may not be used. Simple illustrations and charts formatted as line art (black-and-white only) will be considered. The essays will not be printed in color.
  • References and Notes: WFS recommends using endnotes (not footnotes) and internal citations to references listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. (See The University of Chicago Manual of Style for guidance.) Please avoid excessive documentation: Multiple citations should be grouped in one note.
  • TIP: All fact checking, references, etc., are the responsibility of the author. Papers will be edited solely for punctuation, grammar, spelling, clarity, and style/format consistency.
  • Papers must be accompanied by:
    • Executive summary (abstract) of approximately 50 to 200 words.
    • Brief biographical sketch of the author(s) of approximately 50 to 200 words, including current position and relevant professional and/or educational background.
    • Complete contact information (mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address) of author(s).
  • All materials should be e-mailed to the editor, Tim Mack, tmack@wfs.org.

The editors are seeking knowledgeable and inspiring papers that focus sharply on the conference theme. Other papers will also be considered that cover futures-relevant topics, such as technological breakthroughs and their impacts, shifting values, globalization and its "discontents," and the urgent need to devise sustainable solutions to our economic, environmental, and social problems.

Approximately 20 to 30 papers will be selected for the collection. Papers that analyze a specific problem or group of problems, and that also include a presentation of concrete, practical strategies for solutions, are especially welcome.

The focus of the 2012 conference is entrepreneurship, examined through the lenses of these six subject areas:

  • Sci/Tech
  • Commerce
  • Earth
  • Humanity
  • Governance
  • Futuring

RIGHTS: It is a condition of publication that copyright is transferred to the World Future Society (WFS).

WFS will handle all reprint requests with the primary goal being wide dissemination of the ideas. Most of these requests are small and generate little or no revenue (e.g., a professor wanting to make 30 copies for a class). Any royalties received are used to manage reprint requests and advance the goals of the World Future Society. Authors would be consulted about any major reprint opportunity. And, of course, authors may handle directly any requests they receive for consulting, speaking, and other projects.

Authors may distribute copies of their papers as published (photocopies, PDFs, or similar) without limitation, but they may not license others to do. Upon request, WFS will provide a PDF copy of the final paper without charge as soon as practical after publication.

Authors may use their papers in their own speeches, books, videos, or other works, but they may not license others to do so. Requests for such use should be forwarded to the permissions manager, Jeff Cornish, jcornish@wfs.org.

Submission deadline is February 29, 2012. Send submissions or inquiries to:
