A great power transition likely to affect populations around the world is now under way as economic and political clout shifts from the United States to China, according to political-science professor Ross and international-studies professor Feng. The book explores the many dimensions and possible outcomes of this historic development in a compilation of essays by economists in China, Japan, South Korea, and the United States. The essayists discuss the economic and political power plays they expect to become common fare between China and the United States as the shift progresses. They consider a variety of factors affecting the shift: domestic policies within China and the United States; Chinese and U.S. strategic interests; global and East Asian infrastructures that would stabilize the shift and slow any rush to armed conflict; and the likely foreign-policy approaches that China’s neighbors South Korea and Japan might take as the shift progresses.
