I moonlight as a history instructor and always surprise my students when I say: "As an historian I can say with surety that no doomsday prophecy has ever come true -- from Malthus to Erlich to the Club of Rome; as a futurist I can say with surety that none ever will -- because the prophecy itself triggers a self-correcting reaction".
