Jobs in the arts have been in freefall

Richard Florida made a lovely cottage industry around telling cities, regions and countries that their fortune rose and fell with the attraction of the creative class. His books are giant tomes full of examples about how the secret to economic development is in attracting innovators, wordsmiths, designers and artists, that all good things come in their wake.

Strange then that jobs in the arts are being shed from the economy like a dog trying to get rid of fleas. Artists, writers, musicians, and photographers are disappearing from the economy are rates of 20 - 45% in the last decade.

I wonder what Florida makes of that trend line.

Interesting stats Eric. Could you direct us to the source? And here's his latest assessment of the general thesis http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jobs-and-economy/2012/06/rise-creative-class-revisited/2220/
