About This Issue

The theme of the World Future Society’s 2008 conference, “Seeing the Future Through New Eyes,” was a particularly apt one, for when we use each other to see different points of view, new potential dangers and opportunities become clearer to us.

In addition to these highlights, we also share one of the conference presentations: “The Globalization of Crime” by Stephen Aguilar-Millan, Joan E. Foltz, John Jackson, and Amy Oberg (page 41).

In future issues, we plan to offer more features that draw from the wealth of perspectives and expertise at WFS conferences; in the meantime, we invite you to browse highlights of the 2008 meeting online, purchase a copy of the conference volume, order audio CDs or MP3s of your favorite sessions, and get a head start on next year’s conference by registering now at www.wfs.org/2009main.htm.

On a personal note, I must sadly note the death of my mother and longtime FUTURIST reader, Marjory J. Wagner, on August 3. One of my guiding principles in editing and writing for THE FUTURIST has been to remind myself that my mother was reading my words: I had to make things understandable to her but could not sound like I was talking down to her. She’d never let me get away with that!

Marge also contributed to the Society over the years in small but important ways, including having one of her photographs from a trip to Egypt published in an article on the future of tourism. She also accompanied me to a Society conference in Minneapolis, where she served as a volunteer and enjoyed chatting with participants. I will miss the eyes through which I saw my own future as one of hope and accomplishment.
