2008 Conference Volume Submission Guidelines

The World Future Society is planning to publish a volume of essays in conjunction with WorldFuture 2008: Seeing the Future Through New Eyes.
Approximately 30 papers will be selected for the volume, to be edited by FUTURIST managing editor Cynthia G. Wagner. Papers that analyze a specific problem or group of problems, and that also include a presentation of concrete, practical strategies for solutions, are especially welcome.

Deadline for completed papers is February 29, 2008.

Manuscript Submission:

  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced, with references (if used) placed at the end of the paper.

  • Manuscript length should not exceed 7,000 words (30 pages double-spaced).

  • Electronic text should be submitted as a Word document or other PC compatible word-processing format. PDF files are strongly discouraged.

  • Photographs may not be used. Simple illustrations and charts formatted as line art (black-and-white only) will be considered. The volume will not be printed in color.

  • References and Notes: WFS recommends using endnotes (not footnotes) and internal citations to references listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. (See The University of Chicago Manual of Style for guidance.) Please avoid excessive documentation: Multiple citations should be grouped in one note.

  • Papers should be accompanied by:

          - Executive summary (abstract) of 50 to 200 words.

          - Brief biographical sketch of the author(s).

          - Complete contact information (mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address) of author(s).

  • All materials should be e-mailed to cwagner@wfs.org or submitted on disk to the World Future Society.

The editors are seeking knowledgeable and inspiring papers that focus sharply on the conference theme, "Seeing the Future Through New Eyes." Other papers will also be considered that cover futures-relevant topics, such as technological breakthroughs and their impacts, shifting values, globalization and its "discontents," and the urgent need to devise sustainable solutions to our economic, environmental, and social problems.

Among the topics that will be addressed at the conference are:

  • Health, Medicine, and Human Development: Aging, nutrition, well-being, public health and health policies, preventative care.

  • Society and Culture: Gender issues, relationships, families and lifestyles, crime and justice, population and demographics, creativity, leisure, and the arts.

  • Resources and Environment: Energy, resources, ecosystems, climate change, biodiversity, food and agriculture.

  • Learning and Education: New learning technologies, innovative teaching methods, knowledge-based learning, problem-solving techniques, integration of learning.
